When Is a License Required?
A license is necessary if you intend to distribute your song on streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal and other platforms where you gain income from the streams.
A license is required anytime you plan to use my beat in a song that will be publicly released, distributed, or monetized in any way.
✅ You need a license if you:
- Release your song on streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Deezer, Amazon Music, etc.
- Upload your song to YouTube with monetization enabled (ads, paid promotions, etc.).
- Upload your song to SoundCloud / Audiomack / other platforms with monetization or paid campaigns.
- Sell your song (downloads), run it through a label, or distribute it through a distributor (DistroKid, TuneCore, CD Baby, etc.).
- Use the song for any commercial purpose (brand promo, ads, paid performances etc.).
- Perform the song in a way that generates income (shows, events, ticketed performances, paid appearances).
✅ “But I won’t make money from it…”
If your song is released on major platforms (Spotify/Apple Music etc.), it is considered a commercial release even if you expect low revenue at the beginning. That still requires a license.
✅ Free for non-profit use (no license required)
You may use the beat for non-profit purposes only if:
- You upload the song with monetization turned OFF (YouTube, SoundCloud, etc.)
- You do not distribute it to Spotify/Apple Music or other paid streaming services
- You credit me in the title as: “prod. Docent”
If you later decide to monetize or release the song commercially, you must purchase a license before doing so.
